Music Education & Composition
In 2016 Emmet O'Connor graduated from DIT's Conservatory of Music & Drama with Honours in Composition, where he studied under Dr. David Bremner.
He studied piano with Shirin Goudarzi-Tobin, organ with the late Una Russell and played in masterclasses for Ronan O'Hora, Barry Douglas, and Mary Lennon, winning multiple prizes at DIT in-house competitions.
His compositions have been performed by the Athenry Youth Orchestra, DIT Symphony Orchestra, Sligo Youth Jazz Ensemble, and members of the Concorde Ensemble and RTE Symphony Orchestra.
His primary creative endeavour is as part of the Dublin Hip Hop/Funk band ReGroovanation, where he acts as arranger, writer, and keyboardist.
Emmet has been teaching from home prior to college, and owing (in part) to being home educated is a passionate believer in self-directed, enthusiastic, and holistic learning processes, which he endeavours to impart to his students.
He has experience with students of all ages including very young children who always find his lessons a lot of fun.
Emmet also provides lessons in theory, harmony, duet playing, improvisation, dictation and sight reading and believes that tailoring the lessons to the individual is imperative.
Apart from teaching Emmet has extensive experience as a piano accompanist with choirs and soloists of all ages and has worked as deputy conductor in several instances.
Currently he works with the Forget-Me-Nots, St. James' MISA, and Mellow Tonics choirs (all of whom are based in Dublin and are directed by Norah Walsh)
Other experiences includes: church organist, ceremonial/function pianist, music-workshop facilitator and in a popular context he has played with the National Youth Ensemble (Big Band), soul bands, reggae bands, funk bands, Wedding/Corporate bands (60s/70s/80s) and regularly performs jazz as an accompanist and soloist.
