Piano Lessons Dublin was founded in 2013 by a Slovenian pianist Anja Kuncic. She started giving her first lessons to children when she was only in secondary school and it has been part of her life ever since. After years of teaching in different music schools and developing herself as a contemporary musician, Dublin inspired her to create her own school, incorporating her own personal approach and fresh ideas.
Anja believes that the music should be enjoyed no matter the level or age. Therefore, she always encourages her students to explore and develop their own interests in music. She guides them through this process and equips them with the tools that will allow them to achieve their desired goals in music.
Anja started playing piano at the age of seven in a classical music school in her hometown Ljubljana, Slovenia. Her first ten years of musical endeavours were focused primarily on getting to know the world of classical music through the guidance of an established Slovenian piano teacher Darja Kajfež. As one of the most talented students in her class, at the age of 12 Anja already performed a solo classical concert.
Anja continued her music education at the Conservatory of music Ljubljana with a renowned Croatian classical and jazz pianist Veljko Glodic, and majored in jazz piano. This was the beginning of her passion for jazz that she is still exploring today. The conservatory not only gave Anja the opportunity to further develop her piano playing skills but has broadened her overall understanding and knowledge of music, through studying advanced theory of classical as well as jazz music, arranging and improvisation.
Anja has experience in teaching children of a very young age as well as adults. Throughout her studies, she was giving private piano lessons, while also teaching for various music schools in Slovenia, such as Muzikaviva and Gvido. Apart from piano lessons, Anja also specialises in teaching music theory, either to individuals or small groups.
Playing and performing
Anja has gained broad experience in performing as a soloist as well as with various bands, be it jazz combos, big bands or rock/pop bands. During her studies in Slovenia, she was a regular member of the Big Band Vrhnika for many years and she also got an opportunity to play with the Slovenian Radio big band at the 2007 Slovenian song contest. Anja has also been working as an accompanist with classical solo singers, jazz singers, different instrumentalists as well as choirs, such as Veter.
Since moving to Dublin in 2008, Anja has become quite active on the local music scene. She has been regularly performing with an established Irish song writer, Keith Burke and his band The Little Black Book. With the band she played different music venues in Dublin as well as festivals such as Castlepalooza, The Skerries Soundwaves festival and Phizzfest. Together with Keith, she co-founded a weekly music night “A bit of a swing” in 2012 that is still ongoing, taking place in Jack Nealon pub in Dublin.
Anja is also a pianist in the Downtown Big Band, regularly performing at the Sugar club in Dublin and other theatre venues around the country.
Since 2013 Anja has been collaborating with a Slovenian mezzosoprano Tina Silc, who is based in Madrid. Together they've performed concerts in Spain, Slovenia and Ireland.
